people of the middle ages made their own entertainment. They loved parties,
feasts, games and sports. There were lots of festivals, carnivals and fairs and
feasts on special days like Easter and Christmas. The local villagers would
gather and throw a big party. There was
always lots of eating, drinking, music, games and dancing. Music was popular
with lots of different kinds. Bands play
in town during feasts; they played pipes, fiddles, bagpipes, drums, harps.
Hunting was a favorite sport of nobility. A troubadour was a traveling man that went town to town to sing and tell stories of knights and heroes. Sometimes they had a helper called a jongleur. Games like chess were played by nobles. Gambling with dice, checkers blinds man bluff, cards and horse races were popular. Sports, such as archery, jousting, hammer throwing and wrestling were favorites. Monks chanted in churches. Mummers were people who disguised themselves at festivals. Mayday was the beginning of summer. Other games were: tables or backgammon, fox and goose, shovelboard, hazard and knucklebones.
